About the Artwork (By Joey Velasco)
I noticed this little girl named Dorothy. She wore a straw hat and a curly hair like that of her doll. Hugging the toy close to her chest surely got her hair entangled and misaligned; it eventually fell off. She has just gone through her chemotherapy session and it was heart-wrenching to watch her "Mona Lisa smile." Her mom smiled with eyes of sorrow. Fear clawed within me. I didn't want to be that close; I had to move farther away to avoid eye contact. But my eyes stayed glued on them. I held Dorothy's dangling pale hand just in time to sing the 'Our Father,' Her face lit up and she played with my sausage-like fingers. Dorothy taught me an unforgettable lesson: simple little gestures can indeed express genuine compassion. Holding a hand, a hug, even just a smile
This obra is meant to honor our Dorothys around... the brave children in the cancer ward They cannot play under the rain like other children do. A single IV tube could wrack their frail bodies with unimaginable pains. But when someone journeys with them, they shed that lambent glow. Jesus undergoes chemo with them, I'm sure. They may cry together but they can laugh together too with their Friend reassuring them:" We'll get through this together."
