About the Artwork (By Joey Velasco)
Holding a piece of cloth in one's arms is a Jewish symbol of love, respect, and reverence. I felt disturbed by my own painting: Do I hang my country around my arms with love and reverence? The Filipino has long ago branded himself negatively. And I am one of them. I lost my self-esteem as a Filipino even since childhood. And I wash my hands like Pilate and wipe them with the shattered flag. After they dry, I point my fingers and blame the government and institutions. The confidence to succeed in our own country is simply not there. We blame our countrymen who deserted us. We blame our parents. We blame the rich. We blame the poor. Daily, this wanton betrayal stares at us in every corner of our land, but we no longer see it.
