About the Artwork (By Joey Velasco)
This contemporary crucifixion depicts a crime scene which highlights a boy and a girl trying to reach Jesus and as if imitating his outstretched arms. They are offering a drink and a bundle of sampaguita, their livelihood as vendors. They are offering their lives. Crucifixion was for criminals. 'Take up your cross' before it took on a religious meaning, meant committing one's self to principles and actions which will/might lead to the cross. And that was Jesus' crime: stretching out his arms to give life and liberation to people, especially the poor.
