About the Artwork (By Joey Velasco)
"How did you know it was Jesus?" the reacher showed her student a book. The little girl squinted at the picture and said, "because he has wounds." My alizarin crimson oil runs empry every time I paint Jesus' wounds. I would always depic Him as a wounded Savior, my way of portraying an authentic Jesus who showed his wounded hands, feet, and side to his disciples. Too, it opens my understanding. I have my own wounds due to major surgeries and accidents. I carry the inner scars of shattered dreams and broken relationships, including crisis and tribulations. Often times I find myself too embarrassed to show them that's why I cover them. For me to be whole is to be flawless. But Jesus tells me never to be afraid nor embarrassed of my wounds. "Show me your wounds, just as I show you mine."
From the scars of Jesus I can see light even as I am enlightened. My journey to wholeness begins in believing that the wounds of tragedy or adversity can one day be a blessing not only for me, but through me.
